UC San Diego theatre district Living and Learning Neighborhood
San Diego, California
Client: UC San Diego
Cost: $530 million
Completion: Fall 2023
LEED Gold targeted
Responsibilities: Design Director for a new one million square foot integrated living and learning community on the campus of UC San Diego. The new community includes 2,000 student living units, a 1,200-car underground parking structure, academic space, a conference center, and auditorium, general purpose classrooms, a restaurant and a market hall. The design team coined the phrase “exponential ecology” which captures the notion that for every design decision, at every scale, the design team has considered all aspects of the built environment and the interrelationship of physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. The building forms and arrangement are contextual to the natural landforms caused by rain runoff patterns to the ocean and to the canyons that are defining features of this site and are also composed to maximize views and optimize ocean breezes.
An outcome-driven approach employed a research-based programming process that was intensely collaborative with the users. Understanding that no single learning environment meets the needs of every student, research-based design strategies have solidified the design team’s approach to designing social, educational and meditative environments that will provide students with the freedom and flexibility to curate living and learning environments that meet their personal needs. The residential buildings are designed to create community, shared experiences and personal connections. All are designed to be "home" and encourage activities that will contribute to the social and scholarly success of the residents.
